What is Dyslexia?

The International Dyslexia Association states that dyslexia is a neurobiological condition that affects the wiring of the brain due to which a person struggles with reading, spelling, and writing skills. It is a specific language-based learning difficulty that causes difficulty in fluent word recognition, spelling, and decoding skills.

What are the causes of dyslexia?

Research says that dyslexia is heritable. People are born with dyslexia and there is a very strong genetic link with other members of the family who have difficulty learning to read, write or spell.

Can people with dyslexia be successful?

It is important to identify dyslexia and remediate it at an early age. People with dyslexia can learn to overcome their difficulties in reading and writing and be successful as anyone else. Do children with dyslexia have low IQ?

Dyslexia is not the result of low intelligence. People who have dyslexia are of average to above average intelligence and some are gifted. They struggle to read and spell but they have extraordinary skills of reasoning and critical thinking. 
How to diagnose dyslexia?
There is no one test for assessing dyslexia. The professionals who are well trained to detect dyslexia will administer two or three tests in different areas of language at any age above 5 years.
How can we support children with dyslexia?
There are effective research-based interventions that can bring the child’s reading up to and beyond reading level. Children with dyslexia learn differently and they show exceptional progress if they are taught in the way they can learn best.
